Did you know? In 2023, Environment for the Americas welcomed more than 150 students and early-career professionals through our many internship programs. A record year! We also worked directly with hundreds of educators from Canada to Argentina and the Caribbean to promote migratory bird conservation through World Migratory Bird Day events across the Western Hemisphere. And, together with key partners, we made significant progress in facilitating the development of a conservation plan to help Rufous Hummingbird and other western migratory hummingbird species and in restoring important coastal habitats for shorebirds in the Pacific Northwest.
We have much to be thankful for, but there is still work to be done. During this season of giving, please consider a tax-deductible donation to Environment for the Americas. Your gift supports our many conservation and education programs, including:
Thank you for investing in the future of conservation through Environment for the Americas. We could not do the work that we do without you, our supporters!
"This was my best hike ever!" -6 year-old program participant
"Environment for the Americas has the quality education materials we've been looking for." -Detroit Audubon Society
"This experience was, quite frankly, life changing." -EFTA Intern, 2016
"Keep on doing what you are doing! Great work and efforts! And continuing to get better and better. It's all good!" -World Migratory Bird Day participant, 2017
Environment for the Americas (EFTA) works in diverse communities throughout the Western Hemisphere to motivate bird conservation. EFTA connects people to conservation and introduces the next generation of diverse conservationists to careers in natural resources by providing internship opportunities in national parks, wildlife refuges, and in urban centers, working especially with underserved youth.
Environment for the Americas was created because of the success of International Migratory Bird Day, a program that was created by the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center in Washington, D.C. Program coordination was transferred to the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in the mid-1990's. In 2005, the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation transferred the project responsibility to EFTA. This year, EFTA joined the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) and the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) to create a single, global bird conservation education campaign, World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD).
