Background Statement
Improving Education was founded in 2015 by Jarrod Bolte, a former teacher, administrator, and district leader in a large urban school system. Concerned by slow rates of improvement in early literacy and a lack of school readiness, Jarrod began Improving Education to support the development of innovative approaches to increasing student achievement and improving the educational system for the youngest and most at-risk children. Since 2015, our focus has been on supporting educators by developing new ideas and designs for instruction, and supporting families by providing health and educational materials in the homes of underserved children. We believe that the best results will be achieved if teachers, schools, parents and communities work closely together on common projects towards common goals.
At Improving Education, we believe that literacy is the foundation of all learning. The most fundamental goal of early education is to become a proficient reader, and we are committed to improving early literacy for all children. Bedtime in a Box, a program of Improving Education, activates families to spend more time reading at home through an easily accessible bedtime routine. We provide books, at-home learning materials, and bedtime supplies to families, linking these materials to a nightly routine that nurtures the parent-child bond, provides routine exposure to books and words, and benefits sleep and health.
Bedtime in a Box has reached over 36,000 children across the United States, representing more than $5.2 million worth of materials in the homes of underserved families. Since beginning our work in Denver in 2019, we have distributed over 3,000 Bedtime Boxes to Colorado families through partnerships with Head Starts and other organizations serving young children.
