NASTaP: Native American Sacred Trees and Places

A nonprofit organization

NASTaP focuses on cultural revitalization, the gathering and sharing of knowledge about history, languages, traditions, customs and inherent values of Native American Indian cultures. This includes rediscovering, acknowledging and preserving sacred spaces and culturally modified trees. The aim is to build respectful relationships among Native and non-Native peoples with strong emphasis on supporting Native American youth in the cultural revitalization and preservation. We strive to spread mindful awareness and are in inclusive of all cultures in our membership.

Mission

To inspire discovery, acknowledgement and conservation of Native American sacred trees and places.

Background Statement

NASTaP was founded in February 2018 and Ute elder Dr. James Jefferson served as its first president. We hold an annual conference; this year it was on the Ute Mountain Ute Reservation, where we met with tribal members of the three Ute and several other tribes. We have collaborated with tribes and the Mountain Stewards group to identify sacred places and trees that are threatened and to preserve and protect them. We have traveled throughout the U.S. to realize this goal and have seen many sites that are endangered.
