Founded in 1979, Aspen Film seeks to enlighten, enrich, educate, and entertain through film. We do this by showcasing diverse stories and voices from filmmakers around the globe. We foster community and education by providing residents and visitors access to cinematic experiences that are otherwise unavailable in this area.

Internationally recognized, yet  strongly rooted in community, we produce two signature festivals each year: Filmfest and Shortsfest. In addition, we offer a curated monthly independent film program at the Isis Theatre in Aspen, as well as present multiple special events and community screenings throughout the year in partnership with local organizations.

Aspen Film’s education programs serve geographically and economically diverse audiences, and are among the valley’s most affordable and inclusive cultural offerings. We provide robust, valley-wide school programs which engage students and teachers from Rifle to Aspen. The majority of these programs are offered at no charge and aim to promote cultural understanding; stimulate critical thinking with thoughtful conversation, and deepen the appreciation for one of the most powerful forms of creative expression—film

Testimonials

"Thanks to Aspen Film for providing hundreds of students with the opportunity to celebrate the world of film, filmmakers and stories never imagined. Shortsfest has allowed us to spend a week journeying around the world without leaving the Wheeler Opera House." - Chris Wheatley, Teacher, Aspen High School

“Being able to participate in Aspen Film’s Filmmaker to Classroom project was absolutely one of the highlights of my festival experience. Aspen Film is really shaping student cinephiles and filmmakers who will have a great opportunity to lead their generation, starting immediately. I have no doubt that the film world will be hearing from many of these students in the years to come.” -Eric Johnson, Writer and Producer of LOSER LEAVES TOWN

"Aspen Film is a rare community treasure. It's hard to imagine our Aspen World without the one-of-a-kind experiences with quality original films to which we have all become accustomed." - Samantha Johnson, Former Publisher, The Aspen Times

"Aspen Shortsfest isn’t just about films—it’s about real conversations and connections. Being part of the education outreach was a highlight, getting to engage with curious, passionate minds. The festival truly supports both filmmakers and audiences, and I left feeling inspired." —Elham Ehsas, Director of THERE WILL COME SOFT RAINS

Mission

The mission of Aspen Film is to enlighten, enrich, educate, and entertain through film. We do this by showcasing and cultivating diverse stories and voices from both established and emerging filmmakers around the globe. We foster community by providing access to cinematic experiences and film education that are otherwise unavailable in our rural area. We aim to expand world views, inspire creativity, build community, and play an active role in positive youth development through arts-based learning.

Background Statement

With a reach that stretches through the Roaring Fork Valley, Aspen Film organizes major movie events in every season, offers an extensive education program, and hosts numerous special presentations throughout the year. Some 15,000 people participate annually in our programming.

We are committed to showcasing original and independent content, giving a platform to under-represented voices and elevating the discussion of diversity and inclusion in our community. We host more than 100 film artists and other special guests every year, as well as collaborate with organizations locally and nationally to present quality film programs.

In addition, we offer one-of-a-kind enrichment opportunities through our educational and community outreach initiatives, which target both youth and adults. Thanks in no small part to generous contributions from individuals who engage with us through platforms such as CO Gives Day, the majority of these programs are offered at little or no charge to the community.
