Testimonials

"Aspen Community Theatre was the first place I performed in a show outside an educational setting. It was the first time I worked with a group of artists of all ages to tell a story, where there were older, more experienced actors I looked up to & learned from, & younger, less experienced actors who looked up to & learned from me. I loved being part of a team, creating something together, where each person did their part & contributed a piece to the puzzle. I learned what mascara was & how to put it on. I ate my first challah bread. I watched the results come in, on a TV backstage, for the first presidential election I was old enough to understand. I met my first boyfriend. A little kid sat in my lap for the first time & I felt so grown up. I worked backstage for the first time. I wore a microphone for the first time. I got those ugly white jazz shoes I still wear to dance class 12 years later. I remember walking into the theatre & immediately feeling a shift in energy; everything going on outside was left outside & I was somewhere entirely good. In the craziness of high school, this amazing group of people gave me a place where I felt safe & grounded, & where I could be a part of something bigger than myself." - Cynthia

"Acknowledging the great Aspen Community Theatre accomplishments is my small-town way to thank each person involved for gifting us with his or her labor of love. I could write paragraphs about this year's presentation of "Nunsense." It's phenomenal, over-the-top, poignant and funny. However, all that really needs to be said is, "Go see it." Don't miss this one - go see it, hear it, enjoy the laughter, witness the talent, be awestruck. With deepest appreciation and respect, we thank the talented and dedicated Aspen Community Theatre crew for raising the bar year after year on the pleasure factor of November in Aspen. What a treat; what a gift you all give. Thank you".- NANCY AND WOLF GENSCH

"ACT also gave me my confidence back. I had been thoroughly broken down in theater school and it was through performing with ACT that I started to believe in myself again. I wouldn't be were I am now without it."

Mission

Aspen Community Theatre is an opportunity to participate in, learn from and experience live theatre.

Background Statement

Aspen Community Theatre was founded in 1975 by a small group of community members who wanted an outlet for theatre. The shows started in small 1976, in various venues in Aspen. Moving from smaller venues, ACT moved to the Aspen High School Commons, then to the historic Wheeler Opera House and adding to the Opera House, the Aspen School District Theatre withthe musical "Peter Pan" in 1992.

Aspen Community Theatre is the only organization to produce yearly musical productions that offer performance opportunity for non-equity adult actors from our area. We also offer free workshops in vocal, dance and acting which are open to the public.

Depending on the size of the show, we can have upwards of 80 people on and off stage who volunteer and play a significant role in making our productions as successful as they are.

Since 1980, ACT has awarded over $70,000 in scholarships to graduating high school seniors who plan on pursuing their future in the performing arts. It is worth noting that our scholarships are funded by our concession sales during performance intermissions.

We have begun production steps for new platforms for our theatre company to reach all audiences: small gathering venues, social media and in 2021 our production of Stephen Sondheim's "Company" to celebrate our 45th Anniversary!
