Testimonials

For more than 100 years, ACS has worked relentlessly to save lives and create a world with less cancer and more birthdays. We believe the impact of our work can be best understood through the words of patients and caregivers who have relied on ACS programs and services during one the most difficult times in their lives.

"Hope Lodge has made my father's treatment and care so much more enriching. I can't imagine what cancer patients would do without Hope Lodge. If we had to stay at a hotel, there would be no place to eat, no company or support, and no transportation. The people here are so generous and uplifting. We couldn't have survived the treatment for my father without the Hope Lodge. It was a Godsend."
- Cynthia, Caregiver

"Calling the American Cancer Society and requesting trips with the Road to Recovery program has been a blessing. We wouldn't have been able to get John to his brain cancer treatments without ACS's help. We are on a fixed income, have saved well and John retired from CDOT, just before he was diagnosed. Margaret, our angel, has become a friend and made a huge impact on our quality of life. She is the volunteer who drives us the most. We are so fortunate to have the American Cancer Society and free rides to treatment."
- Sandy, Caregiver

"A place like Hope Lodge is priceless. Cancer isn't cheap. Hope Lodge is a home away from home. Once here, you feel relaxed and calm. All the guests know each other by name and know each other's stories. It's almost like a second family. It's warm and comforting here."
- Tanya, Patient

Giving Activity

Mission

The American Cancer Society (ACS)'s mission is to improve the lives of people with cancer and their families through advocacy, research, and patient support, to ensure everyone has an opportunity to prevent, detect, treat, and survive cancer.

Background Statement

When ACS was founded in 1913, a cancer diagnosis meant near-certain death. Rarely mentioned in public, the disease was steeped in fear and denial. Our founders, a small group of doctors and local volunteers, sought to change not only the public perception of cancer, but also to discover and promote better diagnosis, treatment, and patient care options for all.

Today, the ACS is the largest funder of cancer research outside of the government, investing more than $5 billion since 1946. In the 1960s, the ACS began providing transportation assistance for patients in need of free rides to and from cancer treatment. In 1970, the first ACS Hope Lodge was opened in Charleston, South Carolina to provide free lodging for patients and their caregivers while traveling for cancer treatment. ACS is proud to have contributed to the work that has resulted in a 31% drop in the overall cancer death rate in the United States since 1991.

Over 1.9 million Americans, including 28,480 Coloradoans, will be diagnosed with cancer this year. Thanks to more than a century of hard work by the ACS and partners, a cancer diagnosis today does not come without hope, and the cancer journey is not one a patient must embark on alone.
