Colorado's Alternatives to Violence Project is a series of experiential workshops offered in Colorado prisons, reentry organizations and the larger community. We believe passionately in the human capacity for redemption, and that no one is defined by the worst thing they have ever done. Our hope is to empower people to find the best within themselves and the capacity to make nonviolent choices for the betterment of themselves, their families and their communities.

Giving Activity

Mission

Colorado’s Alternatives to Violence Project provides training in Colorado prisons and communities to deal with potentially violent situations in new and creative ways. Through our workshops, we empower people to lead nonviolent lives through effective communication, affirmation, respect for all, community building and cooperation.

Background Statement

The Alternatives to Violence Project (USA) started in 1975 after the Attica prison riots in New York. A group of prisoners at Green Haven Correctional Facility in upstate New York went to the local Quaker group, which was already volunteering in the prison, and asked for training in nonviolence. They also partnered with Bernard Lafayette (a colleague of Martin Luther King, Jr.) to begin to create the resource manual that we use today to facilitate nonviolent workshops around the world.
