IOL Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.®

A nonprofit organization

Alpha Phi Alpha™, the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African American Men, was founded on December 4, 1906™ at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York by seven college men who recognized the need for a strong bond of brotherhood among African descendants in this country.

Alpha Phi Alpha™ evolved into a primary service organization and provided leadership and service during the Great Depression, World Wars, and the Civil Rights Movement. Our fraternity addresses social issues such as apartheid, AIDS, urban housing, and other economic, cultural, and political issues affecting people of color.

In addition, the fraternity partners with philanthropic programming initiatives to include March of Dimes, Head Start, Boy Scouts of America and Big Brothers/Big Sisters of America.

In the Pikes Peak Region, ten men with tenacious foresight and incredible resolve embraced the need for expanding the international borders of Alpha Phi Alpha™.  On December 22, 1969, the Iota Omicron Lambda Chapter of our fraternity was established and formally recognized in January 1970.

Alpha Phi Alpha™, Iota Omicron Lambda Education Foundation is the charitable arm of the chapter and focuses on educational programs, training, youth leadership development, and the awarding of several scholarships annually to deserving students.

Moreover, the foundation has oversight for the planning and implementation of special projects, fundraising, and scholastic excellence activities.

Background Statement

The Young Men of Alpha Program is a community service project of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. ® Locally; the program is administered through the Iota Omicron Lambda (Colorado Springs Alumni) Chapter. This community service project comprises two Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. ® national programs, “Go-to-High-School” and “Project Alpha.”

• The "Go-to-High-School, Go-to-College" program, established in 1922, concentrates on the importance of completing secondary and collegiate education as a road to advancement. Statistics prove the value of this extra impetus in making a difference in the success of young African-American men, given that school completion is the single best predictor of future economic success. Through the Go-to-High- School, Go-to-College educational initiative, young men receive information and learn strategies that facilitate success. Alpha men provide youth participants with excellent role models to emulate.

• Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. ® and the March of Dimes began collaboratively implementing “Project Alpha” in 1980. Designed to provide young men with current and accurate information about teen pregnancy prevention, Project Alpha consists of a series of workshops and informational sessions conducted by Alpha Phi Alpha ™ Fraternity brothers. The three goals of Project Alpha programs are:

○ Sharing Knowledge by combating ignorance and fear with factual information

○ Changing Attitudes by providing motivation toward positive changes in sexual behavior

○ Providing Skills by creating a sense of empowerment and self-esteem
