Background Statement
Founded in 1958 as a 501(c)(3) after the launch of the Russian Sputnik, the ARCS Foundation is dedicated to promoting United States leadership in various scientific fields. With over 1400 members in 15 chapters, this all-women volunteer organization supports students in 50 colleges and universities across the country. ARCS is nationally recognized for providing over $100 million to fund over 16,500 scholarships to top U.S. students in science, technology, engineering and medicine. ARCS alumni are making significant contributions to scientific strength and leadership in our country.
The ARCS Colorado Chapter received its charter in 1976 and since that time has awarded more than 1,200 scholarships to outstanding science students in Colorado for a total of over $5.9 million.
A student receiving a scholarship must have a high scholastic record and demonstrated ability, be a citizen of the United States, and have financial need. Selection of the students is made without regard to race, creed or gender by the deans and department heads from the institutions receiving the funds. The National Board of ARCS approves the recipient colleges and universities based on their excellence in national rankings. The awards are given to both graduate and undergraduate students and are administered by the institutions receiving the allocation.
Members of ARCS are volunteers who willingly and enthusiastically donate their time, efforts, and financial support on behalf of the students. Because 100% of every dollar donated to scholarships goes directly to the scholarship funds, ARCS Foundation, Inc. provides a way for corporate and civic organizations and individuals in the community to combine their resources and efforts to support American scholars, helping to insure a better future for all.
Over two thirds of the donations come directly from members. Approximately 30% of the membership receives the designation of ARCS Angel for donating at least $500 above the membership obligation to ARCS in a year. A number of member contributions provide full $6,500 scholarships.
The ARCS Colorado Endowment Funds produce the following scholarships each year:
• ARCS/Davis Endowment Fund - three scholarships
• ARCS/Helen and Joseph McConaty Endowment Fund - one scholarship
• The James H. Shore/ARCS Endowment - one scholarship
• The Ludeman Family Endowment - one scholarship
. Wayne Shank Endowment
. Nancy Seacrest Wright Scholarship Fund - two scholarships
The ARCS Gala, our only fund raising activity each year, accounts for a number of $6,500 scholarships per year.
The remainder of the donations comes from corporations, foundations, memorials, and Friends of ARCS.
Our recipient schools are:
Colorado School of Mines
Colorado State University
University of Colorado at Boulder
University of Colorado at Colorado Springs
University of Colorado Denver
University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus
Some unique features of ARCS:
• 100% of every dollar donated to scholarships goes directly to scholarships.
• ARCS awards for basic scientific education are among the largest of any private membership organization in the United States.
• ARCS is an all-volunteer national women's organization dedicated to helping provide an education to the most promising science, engineering and medical students.
• The only three qualifications for receiving the scholarship are that each recipient is outstanding in his or her major field, has financial need, and is a U.S. citizen.
• ARCS Colorado has no paid staff; the members perform all administrative duties and expenses are funded from membership dues.
• The scholarship ($6,500) provides significant aid to the recipients.
• The deans and department heads at each of ARCS Colorado Chapter's recipient schools choose the scholars and administer the funds with no charge.
• The women of ARCS spend time getting to know the recipients of the ARCS scholarships, giving them encouragement and confidence in their abilities. The students are grateful for the personal attention as well as the monetary assistance to their education.
• Past scholars support ARCS financially and become members of the organization. A former ARCS scholar served as co-president of the ARCS Colorado Chapter 2006-08.
• In 2000 ARCS alumni scholars donated enough money for the Colorado Chapter to award the first ARCS Alumni Scholarship.
