"For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction." Newton's 3rd Law of Motion is the philosophical backbone of 3rd Law Dance/Theater. New ideas are generated through the push/pull in movement, emotion and concepts, generating timely original works that speak to our community.

3rd Law Dance Theater was named "Living Legends of Dance in Colorado" for 2016.

"[The directors are] seasoned and confident enough as artists to brave the truest expression of collaboration...They know that to bring something new to light from a merging of multiple viewpoints is to also leave something out - to let go of a fixed idea, of expectations or ego, to allow something new in. That the freshest, most exciting ideas are born from a shared vision..." Gwen Gray-Scen3

"I loved...where the quiet relationship of bodies was so completely satisfying, and so exquisitely executed by the dancers." Audience member

Background Statement

3rd Law Dance/Theater began operations on January 1, 2001 to create high quality, innovative, and thought-provoking dance art in Boulder and the surrounding region. Collaboration with musicians, audio-visual and media technologists, and/or actors in the creation of original new work with Company dancers has been a hallmark of 3rd Law and helps introduce modern/contemporary dance to new audiences. The Company continues to evolve using increasingly sophisticated choreography and offering more diversified educational offerings for people of all ages and abilities. In 2013, 3rd Law won the "Cutting Edge Award" from the Colorado Dance Alliance for "innovative and creative use of 21st-century artistic and technological tools in dance." Co-Founders Katie Elliott and Jim LaVita were named "Living Legends of Dance" for 2016 by the Carson Breierly dance library at the University of Denver in recognition of the companies outstanding artistic record and the directors contribution to dance in Colorado. The success of 3rd Law's performances are inextricably tied to its unique choreography and the quality of the dancers.

The Company's major dance/theater works have been developed using themes that have serious community impact - e.g. immigration and migration, veterans returning from war, the effect of digital technology on individuals and community, challenges faced by tradition and its relationship to the modern world, and our place in the natural environment.

Today, 3rd Law Dance/Theater embodies the bold vision of its founders: creating distinctive, groundbreaking choreography in collaboration with world-class local artists and virtuoso dancers, and offering a broad array of movement classes ranging from professional training and choreography workshops that cultivate the next generation of dance artists to joy of movement programs for seniors and other adults struggling with Parkinson's Disease and other mobility considerations. 3rd Law Dance/Theater is the premiere modern dance company in the Boulder/Denver region beloved by audiences and collaborative partners for its ambitious, cutting edge work and by professional dancers, artists and community members for its excellent classes that are the cornerstone of a vibrant modern/contemporary dance community. Through its commitment to artistic excellence and programmatic offerings, 3rd Law Dance/Theater is a key contributor to the broader cultural landscape in the Boulder/Denver region.
