Mission Statement

NEWSED promotes the economic success of underserved populations in the seven-county Denver metro area through community development with a focus on affordable housing, small businesses and asset creation.

Organization History

In 1973 NEWSED was founded as part of the national Community Development Corporation (CDC) movement. NEWSED started serving the Denver community with the emphasis of promoting economic development, characterized by community leadership and work primarily in housing, commercial development projects and job creation in low-income and marginalized communities. In 1979, NEWSED launched the Santa Fe Drive Redevelopment Corporation to help with the redevelopment of Santa Fe Drive and West Denver. Ever since then, NEWSED has developed over 92,000 square feet of retail and commercial space with the aim to increase the economic vitality of the neighborhood. In 1997 NEWSED began a Housing Division with an initial focus of providing affordable housing services in form of one-on-one counseling, down payment assistance and CHFA approved workshops for interested 1st time home-buyers In 1987 NEWSED began to produce the Cinco de Mayo "Celebrate Culture" Event that has grown to be one of the largest two day events in the country. In 1998 an added component to the Housing Division NEWSED began the process of refurbishing and selling affordable single family homes. As an added component to the housing division response NEWSED began Foreclosure Counseling in 2006.

Testimonials

I was at a point in my life without a lot of choices.
Single in the city of New York, laid off from my job with no other prospects or family nearby, I decided to move to Colorado to be near my sister. After moving to Denver I knew I wanted to own a home but didn't know the process and needed some guidance. So while searching for a job I began researching the available community resources for first time home buying. That's when I found NEWSED and began my housing counseling process with a housing counselor. She was able to assess my likelihood of qualifying for an Individual Development Account (IDA). Through approval from Mile High United Way I quadrupled my savings power in a relatively short amount of time with the IDA product. My FICO score and credit history required some repair which my housing counselor was able to assist with. It took me a total of a year and five months to become qualified for a home loan but along the way I gained a valuable financial education. Now I am proud owner of a new 2 bed, 2 bath bachelorette pad in Denver's South Park Hill neighborhood.
