About Mack Boulder

A School With a Groundbreaking History

It Started With a Bold Idea

In the 1970s, educator Eve Mackintosh saw something missing in Colorado education: a school designed around the unique strengths and needs of gifted children.

Eve believed children thrive when their education matches their potential. When curiosity is encouraged, creativity is valued, challenge is welcomed, and learning is connected to meaningful problems worth solving.

So in 1977, she created the school she believed children deserved: Mackintosh Academy, Colorado’s first school dedicated to gifted and talented learners.

A Family - and a Community - Builds a School

From the beginning, Mackintosh was about educating the whole child. Eve developed a program that nurtured students academically, socially, emotionally, physically, and creatively. Her family, including sons Trip, Todd, and Andrew and daughter-in-law Whitney, helped turn that vision into an enduring school.

In 1990, Mackintosh purchased its Littleton property, and Trip and Whitney Mackintosh became joint directors, carrying Eve’s vision into a new generation.

A Boulder Campus Takes Root

In 2011, another bold chapter began when Mackintosh Academy purchased 23 acres on South Boulder Road and opened its Boulder campus.

That extraordinary campus was made possible through the generosity and vision of donors, including the Lee and Gill families. The campus was named the Pamela Andreas Boulder Campus in honor of Andy Lee’s late mother.

Today, those 23 acres are an extension of our classrooms: a place where students learn, explore, create, play, connect with nature, and put their ideas into action.

The Vision Continues

Nearly 50 years later, Mackintosh continues to evolve while holding tightly to Eve’s original vision. Students have sustained opportunities to explore the arts, world languages, physical education, the outdoors, and other disciplines that develop the whole child alongside rigorous academics.

And we continue to ask the kinds of questions that inspired our founding: What do children need now? What will they need for the world ahead? And how can we create an education worthy of their potential?

Eve called it nurturing the “seed of unique genius” in every child.

That idea has carried Mackintosh for generations and continues to inspire what we build next.

Mission

Mackintosh Academy – Boulder nurtures the keen minds and compassionate hearts of the gifted child in a responsive and caring community of learners. Our students mature into confident, healthy human beings inspired to contribute to a world that needs them.

Three mission tenets – Keen Minds, Compassionate Hearts, and Global Action – make up the foundation of our mission and educational approach at Mackintosh.

As an authorized International Baccalaureate (IB) School since 2006, Mackintosh Academy’s mission aligns with the International Baccalaureate program’s mission, “to create a better world through education.” Read the full IB mission statement on the International Baccalaureate organization’s website and learn more about our IB Primary Years Programme and IB Middle Years Programme.
