Mission

Background Statement

The American Lung Association (ALA) is the leading organization working to save lives, improve lung health, and prevent lung disease. Lung disease is ranked as the fourth leading cause of death in the U.S. The American Lung Association in Colorado (ALAC) is often the first point of contact for those impacted. The organization is a local affiliate of the ALA, the oldest, voluntary, non-profit health organization in the U.S. Since 1908, ALAC has been serving Colorado. As part of its national restructuring, ALAC merged with Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and Utah to become the American Lung Association of the Southwest, Inc. (ALASW). The local organization continues to do business as ALAC; however the merger allows for minimized overhead costs while providing optimal services and resources in Colorado. All funds raised in Colorado are used to support Colorado programs and services.

The American Lung Association in Colorado offers practical help to people living with asthma, emphysema, lung cancer and other lung diseases. We also confront lung disease at the root level, educating kids about the dangers of smoking, pushing for more smoke-free workplaces and even working to reduce air pollution.
