Mission

The Legal Aid Foundation promotes equal access to justice by raising funds to provide free civil legal services for low-income Coloradans.

The money raised by the Legal Aid Foundation goes to Colorado Legal Services. Its mission is to provide meaningful access to high quality legal services in the pursuit of justice for as many low income people throughout Colorado as possible. Colorado Legal Services is the only agency in Colorado that provides free legal assistance in civil matters in every Colorado county, operating like a legal emergency room to serve those at greatest risk and in greatest need.

Background Statement

Many Coloradans cannot afford a lawyer to defend their legal interests and resolve their legal problems, no matter how urgent or serious the matter. And unless you are involved in a criminal matter, you have no right to a lawyer at public expense. Colorado Legal Services provides high quality, free legal assistance in civil proceedings like divorces, protection orders, child support cases, home foreclosures, evictions, bankruptcies, landlord-tenant disputes and the like.

Incorporated as Colorado Legal Services in 1999, with the consolidation of the three then-existing legal aid programs in the state, Colorado Legal Services now provides services across the state through a network of 13 offices. There are offices in Alamosa, Boulder, Colorado Springs, Denver, Durango, Fort Collins, Frisco, Grand Junction, Greeley, Hayden, La Junta, Pueblo and Salida. With few exceptions, those eligible for services have annual incomes at or below 125% of federal poverty, which, as of May 2023, means $18,255 year for a single individual and $37,500 for a family of four.
