The Colorado Lions KidSight Program screens children as young as six months to identify potential problems at an early age and works to address vision problems before they negatively affect academic performance and before permanent vision loss can occur.
KidSight Colorado volunteers screen children with a Plusoptix S12 vision screener. Based on an analysis of our historical data the screeners are 85-90% accurate in detecting vision problems and provide a more thorough screening than standard vision screenings such as a Snellen vision test often administered by schools. The screeners work especially well with young children since the lights and sounds of the screener engage the child and the screening can be done in an average of five seconds at a non-threatening distance from the child.
Our online database allows us to capture data and evaluate our program. The database currently contains more than fifteen years of vision screening data giving us the capability to analyze data and identify trends over time.
In our 2017-2018 fiscal year the Colorado Lions KidSight Program has screened more than 52,000 children all over the state of Colorado. More than 5,000 children were referred for a complete eye exam when a vision problem was detected.
Feedback from eye doctors indicates that our screenings were accurate more than 90 percent of the time.
