Mission Statement

Intercambio exists to ignite human potential by cultivating a world where people from different cultural backgrounds connect, communicate and engage.

We provide English language education, resources, and training that create meaningful connections, build cultural awareness, and inspire confidence.

Organization History

In 2000, Intercambio de Comunidades was founded to help Spanish-speaking immigrants in Boulder County learn English and improve their families' quality of life. In 2005, Intercambio broadened to focus on all immigrant communities. In 2011, we changed our name to Intercambio Uniting Communities to better reflect our diverse student population.
Intercambio has provided affordable, in-home and group English language classes and Cultural Skills education to more than 10,000 adult immigrants in Boulder County. We have trained and supported more than 5,000 local volunteer teachers, who are integral to our ability to provide high quality services at low cost. Our monthly intercultural events bring together thousands of diverse individuals each year to bridge cultural divides and build social capital.

"Intercambio's focus on cross-cultural exchange through language education serves as an inspiring example for other communities as they work toward better cross -cultural understanding."

Ken Salazar
Secretary of the Interior

Volunteer Teacher: As an ESL volunteer teacher for Intercambio I have most likely learned much more than my students. I embarked on this journey with the intent of being part of the solution in helping immigrants transition to their new environment more easily. I had absolutely no idea of the intrinsic value of the relationships I would form with my students. I have a completely new appreciation for the challenges they have in learning to live in the United States.
Teaching English is so much more than grammar and sentence structure, it is providing students with communications skills, confidence and the ability to navigate their new environment. Simple things such as being able to attend their child's parent/teacher conferences, shopping on their own more comfortably, it is providing them with a sense of freedom that changes their lives.
