Helen Benavidez was born and raised in Pueblo, Colorado. Helen feels as though she has been doing some type of social work throughout her entire life and career. Helen retired from the Department of Social Services in Child Welfare after 17 years. Prior to that, Helen worked as an HIV Outreach Educator for Southern Colorado AIDS Project in Colorado Springs and Pueblo. Before that, Helen volunteered for AFSD which ultimately resulted her being hired to work as a Bilingual Case Manager and ultimately, as a Food Bank Coordinator for AIDS Foundation San Diego in San Diego, California.
