Pelham G. Pearce, General/Artistic Director
Start Date: 1996

Pelham G. Pearce was selected in 1996 as Managing Director and named General/Artistic Director in 1998. During his 21-year tenure, Mr. Pearce has set forth the company's current artistic mission of balancing traditional and progressive works. Central City Opera's national and international reputation has been elevated with American premieres such as Gloriana in 2001 and world premieres, including the new Chinese opera Poet Li Bai in 2007, garnering press coverage all over the world. Nationally, Mr. Pearce has served as Chairman of the Grants Review Panel for the NEA, as a juror for the Rosa Ponselle International Voice Competition and Regional Met Auditions, and as Board Member for OPERA America. In May of 2013, Mr. Pearce received the Bonfils-Stanton Foundation Award for the Arts and Humanities.

John Baril, Music Director
Start Date: 2000

A versatile conductor, John Baril has led critically acclaimed performances of symphonic and choral music, ballet, opera, operetta and musical theater. As newly-promoted Music Director, the first in Central City Opera's history, John led Don Giovanni in 2006, Massenet's Cendrillon for the company's 75th anniversary season in 2007, sold-out performances of Bernstein's West Side Story for its 50th anniversary celebratory performances in 2008 and teamed up with Malfitano for a new production of Lucia di Lammermoor in 2009. For the past twelve seasons, he has worked closely with the apprentice and studio artists in the Bonfils-Stanton Foundation Artists Training Program at the Central City Opera Festival, leading them in main-stage performances of Manon, Pique Dame, The Barber of Seville, Rigoletto, Madame Butterfly, Tosca, La fanciulla del West, Candide, La traviata, Little Women and Carmen. Next summer, John conducts a new production of Il trovatore.
