The Dolphin House

The Dolphin House Child Advocacy Center serves child abuse victims from Delta, Gunnison, Hinsdale, Montrose, Ouray and San Miguel counties. In 2015, we served 131 primary victims; most were victims of sexual abuse. We also serve more than 300 secondary victims each year--non-offending parents and siblings. We also provide follow-up services to 110 families annually. Our mission is to provide help, hope and healing for victims of child abuse and your donation will help us do this.

Description

The Dolphin House Victim Services Program provides help, hope and healing for victims of child abuse in the six counties--including Delta, Gunnison, Hinsdale, Montrose, Ouray and San Miguel Counties--which comprise the 7th Judicial District in rural Western Colorado.

Services to victims include crisis intervention, ongoing and regular support, referrals for community assistance when needed, formal mental health assessments and referrals to specially-trauma trained licensed therapists, follow-up with families and therapists to ensure victims are making positive progress. We also provide safe, non-threatening, child- and adolescent-friendly facilities for the victims forensic interviews and medical exams.

We coordinate a multidisciplinary team process for investigation and prosecution of all cases; this team includes professionals from law enforcement agencies, Child Protective Services HHS agencies, victim advocates, medical and mental health, the District Attorney's Office and our Dolphin House staff.

We continue providing services to victims until we are certain the victims have stabilized and healed--leading normal, productive lives in their communities.

Evidence of Program's Success

"I had no idea what the Dolphin House was when law enforcement asked me to bring my daughter there. What we found was a safe, peaceful "home" and a warm welcome. We were treated with respect and could feel that the staff really cared about what happened to us. We are thankful that the Dolphin House was there for us and for all other families who are victims, as we were, of child sexual abuse." -- Mother of child victim

"The staff are top notch and it is quite apparent that their hearts are involved in making a difference in the lives of victims of child abuse. They do everything exceptionally well!" - Father of young victim

"It is people like you that got us where we are today. The sentencing our stepfather received and the strength we were given to put him behind bars lies solely in the fact that people like all of you opened your hearts to us and helped us speak up AND heal. We are blessed to have been able to access services at the Dolphin House." -- a message received in April 2013 from three sisters who were among the victims we served in 2005. Two of the three are now married and have children of their own. The youngest of the sisters is engaged. They came back to the Dolphin House in April just to say "Thanks for being there for us."
