Description

The number of disabled and wounded military veterans has greatly increased due to the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Many members of the military return from active duty with paralysis, traumatic brain injuries and amputations due to injuries sustained in combat. These veterans seek to improve their quality of life and participate in outdoor activities with their family and friends, despite their disability.

Depending upon their disability, veterans utilize a number of adaptive ski techniques, including: mono-skiing, bi-skiing, two-, three- and four-tracking and blind guiding.

Evidence of Program's Success

We believe the best evidence of the success of our Veteran's Program comes directly from our students:

"I am a 37 year old disabled veteran. I was hit in the back with a piece of a weapon that was being disassembled incorrectly in 1995. My experience with this program is nothing if not thankful. I see the effects that the instructors have on the participants. Their knowledge, skill, and compassion are above reproach. My quality of life has improved because of this program. I can now spend more time with my husband who loves to ski, but hasn't because I did not know how."

"Not only was I once again able to enjoy skiing and the outdoors, but I also had the courage to carry my newly gained confidence into the world of wheelchair sports competition and participate in the Marine Corp trials for the Wounded Warrior Games. Without the Ignite program at Eldora, none of these improvements would have been possible. Ignite has fundamentally changed my life for the much better."

Description

Ignite Adaptive Sports provides safe, fun and affordable snowsport instruction for students with both cognitive and physical disabilities. Current programming includes alpine and cross-country skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing opportunities. Lessons run from January through March and are held Thursdays through Sundays. All lessons are private and may include two or more instructors based on the individual's needs.

Ignite's program participants have varying disabilities including autism, cerebral palsy, missing limbs, paralysis, visual impairments, and post-traumatic stress disorder with many experiencing more than one type of disability. Outdoor sports enthusiasts of all ages and disabilities are welcome to take part in Ignite's nationally recognized program.

The students who take advantage of Ignite have special needs that cannot be met by traditional teaching methods. We offer lessons to individuals of all ages and turn no one away due to their disability or ability to pay for our services. During lessons, students not only enjoy their time on the mountain, they also build confidence that they can apply to other areas of life.
Ignite's very existence is based upon our belief that everyone should be able to enjoy winter sports regardless of having a disability.
