Habitat for Humanity raises funds to cover the upfront cost of building a home and then extends a unique opportunity to deserving families. Through generous donations and community support, Habitat secures the necessary funds to construct safe and affordable homes. Once the house is complete, Habitat provides the homeowner with a 30-year interest-free mortgage that is tailored not to exceed 30% of their income. This innovative approach makes homeownership attainable, ensuring that families can achieve their dreams of owning a home without the financial burden of traditional mortgages. It's a commitment to building not just houses but sustainable futures for individuals and communities.

Testimonials

“In December of 2022, I had pretty much given up. I was struggling to find a place to live and I was struggling to find faith in humanity….and then I got a call. I had been accepted into Habitat for Humanity’s homeownership program. Since then everything has changed and a group of people have accepted me as part of a team that works with heart and determination to not only build homes, but raise money to build those homes. Your donation is put to good use!"

 - Deb, Future Homeowner

"Habitat for Humanity is more than affordable housing. For my family and I, it is breaking what seemed to be an endless cycle. A cycle of housing instability, living in poverty, and toxic environments. Habitat will be providing a childhood home for my kids to grow up in which is something I always wanted for them. Not only for them to grow up in, but to feel safe with neighbors who I know well after helping build our homes together. "

- Alyssa, Future Homeowner

"Habitat for Humanity means for me a place for new beginnings. New family, friends, and understanding. A sense of overwhelming gratitude for almost everyone you meet or work with. One place with so many people that have a special place in my heart now, forever."

-Jeannica, Future Homeowner

Mission

Build strength, stability, and self-reliance through shelter. We work to provide safe, decent, and affordable housing solutions for hardworking, low to middle-income families in Mesa County. Background Statement

Habitat for Humanity of Mesa County has a storied history dating back to its founding in 1990. It was born from the vision of a dedicated VISTA volunteer, formerly with the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless, who recognized the urgent need for affordable housing in Mesa County. This volunteer reached out to Habitat for Humanity International to turn this vision into reality. By the end of 1990, Habitat Mesa had secured three lots, marking the beginning of its transformative journey. The first Habitat home was completed and dedicated to a deserving homeowner in October 1991. Over the years, the organization has grown exponentially, constructing an impressive 87 homes for hardworking families in Mesa County by end of November 2023.

Habitat Mesa has evolved from a grassroots volunteer-driven nonprofit into a well-structured organization with a staff of 11 full-time and 9 part-time employees. The Habitat ReStore, established in 2003, plays a vital role in supporting the organization's expenses, helping ensure sustainability while 100% of the donations goes directly to constructing affordable homes.

The Habitat program is not a hand out but rather a hand UP! Habitat homeowners are required to contribute at least 500 "sweat equity" hours, along with participating in monthly homeowner education classes. This commitment lays the foundation for stability, self-reliance, and financial security. Beyond housing, Habitat Mesa builds connections, uniting individuals of diverse backgrounds in a shared goal of making affordable housing a reality. By welcoming all, regardless of differences, and with the support of volunteers, financial contributions, and donated materials, Habitat Mesa continues to fulfill its mission of providing safe, decent, and affordable housing to Mesa County's families. It's a testament to unity, compassion, and the pursuit of brighter futures for all.
