The Rio Grande Headwaters Land Trust (RiGHT) is the only local land trust in the San Luis Valley (SLV) that focusses exclusively on the six counties (Conejos, Costilla, Saguache, Rio Grande, Mineral, and Alamosa). Starting in 1997 with the mission of conserving land, water, and a way of life in the San Luis Valley, RiGHT is a non-profil 501(c)3 and became accredited in 1999 by the Land Trust Alliance. In the nearly 25 years of operating we have conserved over 32,000 acres of mainly riparian and wetlands in the SLV. About 95% of those lands are working lands. In this way, RiGHT is able to keep the viewsheds, water, wildlife habitat, cultural, and historical aspects we all value here in the San Luis Valley, while supporting working lands and families. We raise funds to help cover transaction costs for families with limited resources and if applicable, to compensate landowners for their contribution to society (extinguishment of their development/subdivision rights). Oftentimes, families will use these funds for equipment or other improvements to their operations. RiGHT not only protects these lands and water bodies into perpetuity but offers ecological restoration services to help enhance the property.
