Description

The First Tee of Green Valley Ranch Learning Center is a very active place throughout the year! Our after school program runs from May - October, and children are constantly coming and going. Some children come for classes, while others come to practice. Some complete their homework in our classroom, while waiting for Leadership Council meetings to begin. Some kids come everyday, and others attend once a week. Our program is designed to be flexible to allow kids of all ages and abilities to take advantage of all our program has to offer. Participants in Certification Program have the opportunity to progress through 4 different levels: Par, Birdie, Eagle and Ace. Advancement from one level to the next occurs when the participant accomplishes required milestones, including attending class sessions, playing rounds on the Par 3 course and applying core lessons taught in The First Tee.

Our coaches and volunteer mentors make a weekly commitment to help teach our kids the golf skills necessary to enhance their game as well as the Life Skills to enhance their character. Due to the universality of the Life Skills curriculum, coaches develop lasting, one-on-one relationships with the participants based on much more than golf proficiency. The values-based program rewards responsible behavior, provides character development training, and provides an alternative for the children of our community.
Participants learn about themselves and others through a range of experiences than enhance their golf fundamentals as well as their fundamental values for life. As their opportunities on the golf course expand - so do the opportunities for their futures. Kids enrolled in The First Tee of Green Valley Ranch afterschool program have the ability to stay and utilize the short course and practice facilities ALL day, staying out of trouble, developing skills, relationships and self-esteem. No child will be turned away because of the inability to pay.

Evidence of Program's Success

The First Tee of Green Valley Ranch measures the success of its programs through a number of reporting tools:
1. We ask participating schools to supply their data to The First Tee of Green Valley Ranch showing the performance of First Tee kids on the state-mandated reading and math tests compared to non First Tee kids:
a. Nearly 33% of our certified kids are on the A/B honor roll as proven by the reports cards we receive in the office. Kids that attain this level are awarded a certificate.
b. The rate of overall improvement of participants over students not in the program was 1.3 times greater.
c. On average participants are improving annually in reading and math scores, however, students who participated two or more years are improving at more than twice the rate of the one-year participants.
2. First Tee National gathers statistics and data for all of its chapters. This reporting measures the effectiveness of its "Life Skills Curriculum". The First Tee National gathers these results on an annual basis. Impact report will be submitted if requested.
4. The First Tee of Green Valley Ranch provides a satisfaction survey to parents and students.

Description

The purpose of outreach programs is to expose groups of children to the game of golf and the unique program offerings of The First Tee of Green Valley Ranch. Essentially, these programs serve as teasers of the golf and Life Skills program. Outreach can take place anywhere, not just at a green grass facility, though we do hold various outreach opportunities at our facility. Sometimes held in school gymnasiums or school yards, these programs serve as an introduction to many kids who have never swung a golf club before. Our primary goal with these programs is to peak curiosity of golf with children who have never been exposed to the game and the life lessons inherent to the game.

Evidence of Program's Success

In addition to observed behaviors, The First Tee of Green Valley Ranch measures the success of its outreach programs in a number of ways:
1. Nearly 10% of our enrolled kids at The First Tee of Green Valley Ranch come from our outreach programs.
2. We get 82% of the kids in outreach programs to visit a golf course on a field-trip like basis. This is an increase from 37% just five years ago. Most of these kids have never set foot on a golf course and can't believe it is real grass.
3. 80% of those we partner/collaborate with have us back the following year.
