Background Statement

The Colorado International School was formed in 2005, when a group of dedicated parents, educators, and members of community organizations came together to form a school based on the model of American international schools located abroad. CoIS strives to bring world-class, international education to students from all backgrounds, regardless of cultural or socioeconomic status.

In its eleven years, CoIS has rapidly built an impressive reputation as a unique school that prepares children to become highly educated leaders and engaged community members in Colorado, nationally and internationally. Th Preschool Program at Colorado International School has received the recommendation of ADvancED to be accredited under the AdvancED Early Learning Standards and will become the first preschool in the city of Denver to hold this distinction in October 2016. CoIS serves not only as a school but also as a hub of cross-cultural connection, bringing world-class international education to students from all background, regardless of cultural or socioeconomic status.

CoIS serves students its day school, enrichment and camp programs, In addition to the regular academic and school-day programs, CoIS strives to give its students experiential learning and enrichment education opportunities. The CoIS experiential education model includes weekly classes in art, music, library, technology, and cultural P.E. These activities provide a forum for all students to learn about cultures outside of their own language track and to work together toward a common goal or performance. The enrichment program includes a comprehensive before and after school and summer camp programs, including the only mountain adventure language immersion camps in the Rocky Mountain region. Theses programs include instruction in French, Spanish, German, Italian and Japanese as well as in languages such as Mandarin, Farsi, Arabic and Russian which have been deemed critical to U.S. national and international interests.

CoIS is located within the boundaries of a large public school district with a diverse population-57% Hispanic, 18% African American, 20% Caucasian,- whose students consistently score below 50 percent proficiency in most subject areas. Knowing that parents in Denver are facing these discouraging statistics, CoIS is working to provide its brand of world-class education at a rate that is accessible to families from all backgrounds. CoIS is working to strengthen and rebuild educational offerings in Denver and believes in the expansive potential of each of our students to contribute to positive American and global communities.
