Mission

The mission of the Crested Butte Avalanche Center is to prevent the loss of life, limb and property to natural and human triggered avalanches in Crested Butte, Mt Crested Butte and the surrounding backcountry.

Background Statement

The Crested Butte Avalanche Center was founded in 2002 in response to the need for local avalanche information. At that time, there were no forecasters in our area, but backcountry use and the demand for avalanche safety products was growing. The original reasons have not changed, but the number of backcountry users continues to grow dramatically.
