Catamount Institute

A nonprofit organization

We cultivate explorers & scientists by connecting thousands of kids to nature each year. We harness their natural sense of wonder & curiosity through our outdoor adventures at camp, field trips, after-school clubs, & science classes. We show kids they can change the world.

Testimonials

"I used to stay inside a lot before Catamount Institute, and just go on my phone or watch TV, but now I actually go outside and I look at bugs and trees." - Student

"I just wanted to send you a huge THANK YOU for the camps that Catamount Institute provides. My son has been camping with you since 2012 when he was 6 years old. This year, he is 11 and he is attending four camps! Your camps have been life-changing for him. He is more confident and comfortable outdoors. Last year at your camp he spent the night away from his dad and me for the first time ever - we were more anxious than he was! But your amazing counselors made it such a fun experience for him, and he couldn't wait to go back this year. He now says that every summer he will attend every camp for which he qualifies - he loves every camp he has attended with you. Thank you for all you do - it is appreciated." -- Summer Camp Parent

Mission

Developing ecological stewards through education and adventure

Background Statement

Catamount Institute programs connect youth with nature through meaningful outdoor experiences. Children learn that they have the powerful ability to protect and nurture the natural world within their neighborhood and community. Established in 1997, Catamount Institute's goal is to equip the next generation of citizens to solve real-world problems. It is these young leaders that will be tomorrow's stewards of the earth. We have four central youth education programs that reinforce classroom learning through real-world application in the natural environment: Catamount Outdoor Schools, Young Environmental Stewards (YES) Club, field trips, and camps. All programs are driven by Colorado Department of Education's Colorado Academic Standards. The goal of each program is to equip the next generation of citizens and professionals to solve real-world problems. Half of local elementary-age students spend three hours per day interfacing with technology. Nature can be an anecdote to the stresses and social/emotional disconnection caused by this sedentary lifestyle.
