To provide safe, affordable, accessible housing and housing-related services for the low-income, elderly and disabled of Colorado.
Brothers Redevelopment Inc. (BRI) was founded in 1971, when four Denver residents recognized the urgent need for free or low-cost housing and housing-related services for Southwest Denver's low-income residents. The mission was expanded statewide to accommodate a few outlying sites, high-need areas and rural Housing Counseling clients. While a majority of BRI's activities take place in the seven-county Denver metro area and El Paso County, we do serve all 64 Colorado counties through our Housing Helpline, Housing Counseling Assistance Program and Emergency Housing Assistance Program. These programs have been strengthened to tackle the housing challenges that are being exacerbated by the COVID crisis.
The Home Modification and Repair and Paint-A-Thon programs are the longest running programs in the organization, both formed in the 1970's. During the early 1980's, Brothers made the transition from housing refurbishment to housing provision with its purchase of an 84-unit, federally subsidized senior and disabled adult housing community. Today, BRI owns and/or manages 17 (703 total units) affordable housing developments and now provides social service support on-site through our new Aging in Place Initiative.
BRI is adapting to the rapidly changing housing market in Denver and is supporting Colorado residents most affected by recent affordable housing crisis. We have bolstered our long-standing Housing Counseling program to now include: first time homebuyers, foreclosure, reverse mortgage and rental counseling. In 2014, we established the Colorado Housing Connects helpline to direct callers to appropriate housing resources. Most recently, we have created the Denver Temporary Rental and Utility Assistance program; this allows us to provide financial assistance to prevent evictions and reduce homelessness.
GOALS: BRI's major goals are: (1) ensuring that all households, especially those most vulnerable in our society, are given an opportunity to live in safe and healthy homes; (2) stabilizing and sustaining neighborhoods and communities (3) preserving and increasing availability of affordable housing (4) empowering renters and homeowners through education and (5) formalizing, adding and enhancing services that empower seniors.
BRI has formulated a formal strategic plan to meet foreseen coming needs/challenges and address rising housing prices, growth in senior population and uncertain funding environment. We've branded this plan as our "Roadmap to Sustainability." BRI has identified five primary goals to ensure our existing programs continue to thrive, new initiatives meet the needs of our changing community and the organization continues to function efficiently as possible: (1) Increase availability of affordable housing, (2) maximize earned income through Brothers Property Management, (3) formalize, add and enhance services empowering seniors through Aging in Place Initiative, (4) refresh Colorado Housing Connects Helpline with new platforms and services and (5) reshape BRI key programs and restructure organization for maximum sustainability.
