Meals on Wheels

Class

Food, Agriculture & Nutrition

Beneficiaries

Aging/Elderly/Senior Citizens

Description

This is the most important of the programs managed by Senior Resources of Broomfield. The majority of our donations goes to food preparation and distribution to seniors. The program is of two parts: lunch served within the Senior Center and lunch distributed to seniors throughout the Broomfield community. These meals are served and delivered five days per week.

Food is prepared and served by 2-3 paid employees and volunteers or distributed by 4-5 volunteer drivers. Virtually all of the SRB fund-raising activities are directed to preparation and serving of Meals on Wheels or the transportation of these meals.

Description

This program provides dentures, eyeglasses and hearing aids for the senior community. There are more than 1000 older adults on waiting lists for these services. We are constrained in providing this assistance because of the cost of some of these devices.

Evidence of Program's Success

Our budget increases annually and we now have over 1000 seniors waiting for services. This is success in that seniors are aware of the service and have applied for it ; that success is tempered by the fact that we still are unable to provide as many services as needed.

Poor/Economically Disadvantaged

Description

These are services thtat allow a person to remain at home and live independently. By so doing, there are many fewer places needed in nursing homes and this vastly decreases the cost to the county and state. About 34% of older adults need these services. The services include, housework, routine maintenance, bathing and dressing.

In addition, the program provides material aid to maintain the home and property. About 58% of older adults need these services. These include: heavy housework, yard work and shoveling snow, heavier home maintenance, and durable medical equipment.
