Mission Statement

AXL Academy is a tuition-free PK-8 expeditionary charter school in Aurora that delivers academic achievement, character development and social equity through an active instructional model and a strong school culture.

Organization History

Aurora Expeditionary Learning (AXL) Academy was founded in 2008 as a PK-8 Expeditionary Learning school. The founders chose the expeditionary learning model out of the belief students should be given the opportunity for real-world experiences and active learning through field work and projects. AXL continues in Aurora today to deliver a progressive, real-world experience for every crew member using expeditions, technology and a community-based environment.

"Our family has been with AXL Academy for three years, going into our fourth year in 2018-19. My son is starting third grade and my daughter is beginning kindergarten, though she was here last year for the amazing Pre-K program that AXL offers. Honestly, I was not sure what to expect when we started at AXL in 2015, but I knew I did not want my son in a regular public school where he would get lost in the shuffle. Fortunately, he had an amazing kindergarten teacher and we were hooked. The focus on expeditionary learning allows all students to learn in the way that is best for them - whether that means they learn something by reading it or in a hands on manner, it is all supported by the teachers and staff. The code of conduct that all students learn from their first day at AXL, and that is exemplified by everyone who walks through the door, speaks to the school's dedication to honor and respect each and every person and their strengths.

AXL's small class sizes allow the teachers to really get to know each student and their family so their approach is personalized and sensitive to the student's and family's needs and situation. Every teacher and support staff that we have had contact with has always been willing to work with us and our children and help them when they needed extra help - or push them when they were excelling and needed something more. At the end of the 2016-17 school year I decided to join the school board and quickly realized how little I really knew about what it takes to run a school. This year, I am the Board President and I am excited to see AXL excel academically and be on solid footing financially. My hope for AXL Academy over the next couple of years is to continue on our path of academic excellence, to add to the options of what all the kids can experience, and to see the school become one that is highly recommended by parents, teachers, staff, and, most importantly, students. The best recommendation I can give? When I asked my kids if they would ever want to go to a different school, the answer was a resounding, "NO! We love AXL!" - AXL Parent & Board President
