Background Statement
Nederland is a picturesque mountain town 15 miles west of the city of Boulder in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. The population in the town is 1,337 with hundreds of additional families living in surrounding areas. The community is part of the Boulder Valley School District and is serviced by an elementary, middle, and high school.
In 2002, community residents recognized the need for an affordable, quality early childhood education (ECE) alternative that would alleviate isolation, prepare children of varying abilities for success in school and serve diverse families' needs. The only local private preschool had limited hours and did not reach out to low income andor special needs families. In addition, the fee-based preschool in the local public school was operating at capacity and slated for severe funding cuts. The Town of Nederland modified zoning to accommodate a new school and Peak to Peak Healthy Communities offered fiscal sponsorship. In 2003, Aspen Grove Community Preschool secured its own 501(c)(3).
