The Arc - Jefferson, Clear Creek & Gilpin Counties

A nonprofit organization

Imagine these scenes for a moment:

  • The parents of a fourth grader with Autism in a school parking lot, high fiving because they know their daughter will get the supports she needs to do her best at school. They felt confident and prepared for today’s meeting with teachers and administrators.
  • A 29-year-old man with an intellectual disability proudly grinning as he opens the door to his first apartment. He can live with a roommate instead of his parents because he’s found a part-time job, and he’s finally getting access to appropriate benefits.
  • An aging mother sitting with her 59-year-old son in their living room. He has Down syndrome. They’re having a conversation about the future life he envisions, and who he wants to help him with making decisions. She’s starting to feel peace, knowing he’ll be empowered to make his own life choices with appropriate and reliable input from others after she’s gone.

These are all examples of the impact of advocacy, training, and education provided by The Arc. When generous people like you donate, you are the catalyst that makes these services possible for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) right here in our local community.

We believe that when people are informed, supported, and encouraged, they become their own strongest advocates. We hope you’ll join us in empowering our neighbors of all abilities to live the lives they choose.

During our last fiscal year, 303 people were enrolled in advocacy programs at The Arc – JCCGC. We support people with IDD—and their families and other caregivers—throughout their lifetimes as they navigate complex systems, secure services, and ensure their rights and voices are honored. We walk alongside people with disabilities, helping to uplift their voices and perspectives with local, state, and federal leaders to promote and protect their human rights. We provide a hub for people of all abilities to gather and create community.

We rely on the generosity of donors like you to support this work!

Mission

The Arc promotes and protects the human rights of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and actively supports their full inclusion and participation in the community throughout their lifetimes.

Our vision is that people with intellectual and developmental disabilities will live the lives they choose as valued and respected members of the community.

We do this by:

-Empowering people with disabilities to build the skills and confidence required to advocate for themselves

-Educating families on how to navigate complicated systems and support their loved one’s needs and desires

-Expanding access to the systems that provide critical supports for people with IDD

-Erasing misperceptions about people with IDD

Background Statement

The Arc- Jefferson, Clear Creek & Gilpin Counties began in 1960 with a meeting of local parents of children with developmental disabilities. These parents wanted to create opportunities to raise their children at home instead of institutions, for their children to have access to education and to be valued in the community.

Officially granted 501(c)(3) status in 1961 and having finalized our incorporation in 1963, we have been around for over 60 years, and in that time, we have supported thousands of people in our community and their loved ones.

We have, and continue to, endorse reform in schools, the workplace, residential life, and in the broader community, all with the intent to promote independence and inclusion for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The Arc- Jefferson, Clear Creek & Gilpin Counties serves individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilites of all ages who reside in Jefferson, Clear Creek and Gilpin Counties.
