Originally founded in 1971 as the Great American Laughing Stock Company, Piknik Theatre has become Steamboat Springs' only professional theatre company producing free outdoor performances of two different shows each summer since 2008 currently reaching to up to 1000 audience members, with locals and tourists evenly mixed. Concurrent with the summer Festival performances, our guest artists offer an affordable Youth Theatre Workshop for 15-20 young artists ages 12-18. In 2018, Piknik Theatre expanded to include indoor Shakespeare productions at the local Episcopal Church, production assistance for the annual ice skating show, and after school theatre education programs. A capital campaign to remodel the interior of the Old Stone Church at St. Paul's will turn this underutilized facility into a small scale performing arts space.
