Our mission is to provide a work, enrichment, and educational community where adults with special needs can live full, productive, and satisfying lives in a God-centered and nurturing environment.
Wellspring Community has provided services to adults with developmental disabilities and their families in the Denver metro area since 2008 and Colorado Springs since 2019. We refer to the folks we serve as STARS - because they are the stars of this story! Since our inception, Wellspring has served more than 200 adults from 5 different counties (Douglas, Elbert, Arapahoe, Jefferson, and El Paso). We have grown into a full-time, year-round program with a dedicated site in Castle Rock, and a budget of over $2 million. By offering vibrant and dynamic services to our STARS, Wellspring also provides much needed respite and support to their parents and caregivers - as many as 191 in 2021 alone.
Nicole DeVries was named the Executive Director of Wellspring in mid-2020, after serving as the Development Director for several years and has led Wellspring through the challenges of the global COVID pandemic while continuing to expand Wellspring's impact.
Wellspring's primary program is our Enrichment Program, which offers our STARS more than 50 special learning opportunities such as: dance, choir, acting, photography, fitness, zoology, American Sign Language, sewing, and art. New classes added recently include yoga, landscaping, and event planning. Our in-person programming runs Monday through Friday, 9 am-3 pm.
Wellspring also offers a Virtual Program that combines the warmth, values, and expertise of our in-person program with the accessibility and flexibility of an online experience. Virtual classes are offered four times per day, Monday thru Friday, and are open to all STARS who want to participate. Our virtual teachers all bring the same level of care and creativity to each one of our virtual classes. The classes they teach fall into one of our five major subjects: Learning & Enrichment, Arts & Performances, Health & Fitness, Life & Leadership Skills, and Social Responsibility.
In addition to the the Enrichment Program, our Wellspring & Co. initiative allows for job-training and work opportunities to our STARS in either our Bakery or our Art Studio. Our Bakery is a fully-equipped commercial bakery, servicing the accounts of several large hospitals and grocery stores in the area. Our Art Studio teaches ceramics, painting, and woodworking skills to our STARS.
In September of 2021, Wellspring opened the Castle Rock Collective. Located in the heart of downtown Castle Rock, this combination coffee shop/boutique market was a collaboration with another local nonprofit called World Orphans. Through this incredible partnership, our STARS have the opportunity to have a job that provides meaningful community interaction as well as the thrill of a regular paycheck! Since our Grand Opening in September, the Collective has employed 25 STARS, with 45 volunteers providing over 1500 hours of service per month. And we've averaged over 2000 cups of coffee sold each month! It has quickly become a staple in our community as a place where our STARS are sharing their joy, crafting delicious coffee, and creating a place of belonging and connection.
Along with the Collective, Wellspring created another benefit for adults with special needs. Today, STARS who work in Wellspring's Bakery or the Art Studio are now members and owners of their very own "STARS Cooperative." This allows them to share profits from the production and sale of baked goods and ceramics. You should stop by sometime when it's payday-their joy is absolutely contagious!
It is difficult to put into words the value of the Wellspring Community program to our family. Our daughter is able to have an interesting, productive, fulfilling week instead of staying home day after day. I am so grateful that there are people who understand what an important role Wellspring plays in the lives of our adult children with disabilities and support the tuition assistance program that Karis benefits from. They have our most sincere thanks. Without the tuition assistance, we would not be able to afford for Karis to attend more than a day or two a week. We are so grateful. Karis's quality of life has improved 100%! ~ The Wray Family
Wellspring Community's Work Program is meeting a need in Katie's life for meaningful employment, but it is achieving much more. Her pride in sharing the things she learns each day is obvious. And her desire and confidence in attempting some of these same things at home has been fun to watch! The Enrichment program goes far beyond the goal of meaningful employment, though, by adding fun, rich, rewarding experiences in art, music, dance, exercise, and community interaction. As Katie's parents, we would be hard pressed indeed to provide these same experiences for our daughter. ~ The Woznick Family
As a family we feel so blessed to be a part of Wellspring and know that Brennan is a part of a very unique and special community. We no longer fear for his future. We feel confident that Wellspring will walk beside us as we continue down the path of Brennan's life and that he will always be cared for, loved and honored. ~ The Froehlke Family
We have seen Matt bloom since he started at Wellspring. He is more verbal and initiates conversations more. He has expanded his interests and developed new skills. He seems to be a happier person and has a tighter community of friends. Somewhere along the way I remember hearing about the ABC's - acceptance, belonging and community. At Wellspring Matt is cherished for who he is; he has a sense of belonging and a community that embraces him - and he is flourishing. I am so grateful for the vision, the heart and the stellar staff at Wellspring - for their heart for the community, their creativity and the amazing opportunities they provide that we would never be able to provide on our own. ~ The Statter Family
