Mission Statement

We support the community and the environment by reclaiming and redistributing quality food to those in need.

Organization History

We Don't Waste (WDW) was founded in September 2009 after assessing needs in the community of agencies serving populations typically unserved and underserved, such as: the homeless, domestic violence victims and their children, veterans, and drug and alcohol recovery program participants. With the economic downturn, many of these agencies were and are experiencing reduced funding for food provision services to the needy and hungry. In assessing agencies with the greatest needs as well as potential sources, WDW learned of the huge waste in our community of food prepared but unused in the operations of cultural, sports, entertainment and events venues, caterers and restaurants. WDW determined that linking these two needs---the need to resource high quality, unconsumed food and the need of individuals with limited to no resources to acquire such food--was a much-needed and viable program concept, one offering excellent opportunities to contribute to increased unused food acquisition and distribution within our local community

Response to the concept of collecting available, quality, healthy food that would otherwise go wasted and distributing it to community-based, not-for-profit agencies serving populations with great needs was overwhelming. In fact, demand was so great that it became necessary for WDW to launch its program quickly. Consequently, prior to obtaining its Letter of Determination from the Internal Revenue Service in May 2011, WDW began successful operations in September of 2009 under the fiscal umbrella of the Denver Inner City Parish. We Don't Waste received its own IRS Letter of Determination in May 2011. During this period WDW grew, both in the volume of product recovered (250 tons or $1.1 million in 2010 alone) and in the number of agencies supported (now over 75 providing over 25.3 million servings in 2016 to 10,000+ individuals monthly).
