It is sad when children are made to go to school to fail. Their self-esteem suffers, depression occurs, and their hope for the future nonexistent. This happens when they do not have the needed supports for them to be successful. Our Center exists to help parents change that reality for the better.

Description

Redeem is a mentoring program that reaches out to African American males from ages 5 -21 years old who are struggling with school academically and socially and are at risk for suspension, expulsion or dropping out of school. The objective is to create an individualized experience that combines professional oversight, and family involvement. A flexible approach will keep each child's interest and goals at the forefront of what we provide.
Mentors and Mentees meet in a group once a week after school
Light refreshments are served
Monthly field trips one Saturday of the month (Bowling, Amusement Parks, Mountain visits, Cookout, etc.)
Staff and Mentors receive federal and state background checks.

_______'s mother advised he likes the program because he can relate to his mentor and likes the fact his mentor has the same interest in the ocean as he does. As for _______, he's very reserved, but with time he will become more open with you. The trust-factor in him needs to be built up. As he was leaving yesterday, I teased him about his lack of conversation. He smiled and said he'll try talking more next week. I know you can get to him _______...with your patience and attentiveness I can see a break through. Good job ______!

Description

Parents of children from preschoolers are able to attend trainings and webinars at no cost to them to learn how they can support their child with disabilities. Each month there is one training from 10:00am - 12:00pm and another training from 6:30pm - 8:30pm. Meals, Spanish interpretation, and childcare is provided.

Description

Project Independence provides free workshops to help parents who have children with disabilities learn about options for their children once they leave high school. The project also trains youth from ages 14-21 about their options after high school.
A disability should not hamper a person to live their life to the fullest. We share with participants how to obtain employment in the community, assist in applying for college and vocational school, as well as support with life skills. Statistics shows that people with disabilities earn about two-thirds of the median earnings of people without disabilities. They are less likely to attend higher learning, and more likely to live below the poverty line. Project Independence's goal is to change that.
There are 2 strands of workshops: One for parents and one for youth. They are 5 weekly workshops in a row with 6:00 - 6:30 for dinner and 6:30 - 8:30 for training.

Hi, my name is Laura Rivera and this is my husband Chris Rivera. We have a son who is twenty years old with a chromosome abnormality. His name is Matthew. He attends Manual High School. We found out about this program, I think by email, and it's the best thing that we signed up for this year, for sure. We wish it could continue all year long because we have learned so much. Everything that has been offered, all the presenters that have come in, have helped us tremendously. Matthew is about to age out of school. And that is our biggest fear: What is next? It's a great, great program and I hope it is offered in the future for others.

What do you like about the workshop so far?
"I like how it teaches me to advocate for myself. It also teaches me what to do after I get outside of the house. I also enjoyed the college visit because it showed me what I can do in the future.

What do you think we can improve on?
" I can't really think of anything to change. Maybe when we do something for too long, it can get a little boring."

What has been your favorite part of these classes?
" I feel like I have made friends through this process. We have bonded over sports. I really liked the group a lot."
