Prevent suicide in Eagle County through education, training and HOPE!
The Suicide Prevention Coalition of the Eagle Valley is a group of individuals (including law enforcement, not for profit agencies, mental health providers, first responders, school representatives, etc.) dedicated to suicide prevention education and providing resources for those in need. SpeakUp ReachOut (SURO) was formed in 2009 in response to the tremendously high rate of suicide in both Colorado and Eagle County. A small group of organizations came together to work on preventing suicide, which became a community-wide coalition to address the problem. Monthly meetings brought numerous agencies and individuals together to develop programs to increase prevention strategies and awareness. Expertise has been brought in from both the national and state levels to assit in forming a sustainable coalition. Despite our efforts, our community has continued to see a steady rate of suicide and attempts locally.
SpeakUp ReachOut has a passion and commitment to reducing the number of suicides in our county through prevention, intervention and loss support services.
SpeakUp ReachOut received its 501c3 status in 2014 and is comprised of a Board of Directors and two part-time staff members. The executive director and programming director work minimal paid hours (25 per week total for both positions). We work closely with many other Eagle County non-profits and organizations. Many of our Board members also represent agencies including but not limited to: Eagle, Vail and Avon Police Departments, Eagle County Sheriff's Office, Red Ribbon Project, Eagle River Youth Coalition, Vail Resorts, Eagle County Paramedic Services, Mind Springs Health, Hospice of the Valley, Eagle County School District, Private Practice Clinicians and Vail Valley Medical Center.
We partner and collaborate with the Total Health Alliance, Colorado Department of Public Health, Suicide Prevention Coalition of Colorado, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention- CO Chapter and surrounding county suicide prevention coalitions.
One of the many testimonials...
The training was very valuable for the team! During our reflection, I noticed much more confidence and preparedness in supporting youth. They also made the connection that the Youth Mental Health First Aid training is going to help them in "Life After AmeriCorps."
Thank you, SURO! You are doing such amazing and powerful things in this community. We are so fortunate to have your support!
