Background Statement
St. Vrain Habitat was founded in 1988 and offers "a hand up, not a handout." Home applicants complete a rigorous selection process based on need, willingness to participate and partner in programs, and the ability to repay an affordable mortgage. Selected families must complete up to 500 hours of "sweat equity" toward the construction of their home, complete educational programs on home ownership, and repay the cost of their home to the affiliate through affordable mortgage payments. Habitat homeowner mortgage payments support the construction of future homes in our community. In addition to local building, St. Vrain Habitat sponsors home building globally through its tithe program. Currently, HFHSVV tithes to Habitat for Humanity affiliates in Nepal, Jordan, Lesotho, and Bolivia. In 2016, St. Vrain Habitat began a Neighborhood Revitalization program in The Glen of Dacono, CO, providing repairs to homeowners and building a neighborhood coalition to strengthen community.
