Since its incorporation in 1992 as a private, nonprofit, 501(c)(3) charitable organization, La Plata Open Space Conservancy - a Durango-base land trust - has used conservation easements to permanently protect, for the benefit of the community and the general public, Southwest Colorado's most cherished working, open space, recreation, and historic lands, and those lands' associated water resources. In pursuit of that mission, the Conservancy has permanently protected, through creating and stewarding conservation easements, in excess of 30,000 acres of land in Archuleta, southern Hinsdale, La Plata, eastern Montezuma, southern Ouray, and San Juan Counties.
