Save the Colorado

A nonprofit organization

Save The Colorado believes that our society needs to stop draining and destroying rivers and focus on river protection and restoration. Your donation will make a difference in our ability to keep the Colorado River alive for future generations of people and the non-human species that depend on it.

Our Active Programs

Save The Colorado's is the leading voice in the Southwest U.S. on these three campaigns:

1. We support freer flowing rivers by opposing every new dam/diversion/pipeline that is proposed in the Colorado River basin. The River, and its management, is in extreme crisis and it's insane to be proposing or constructing new dams and diversions. We are actively fighting new dams/diversions/pipelines in Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, New Mexico, and Arizona. In fact, over 20 new projects are planned that would further dam or drain the Colorado River system. We are on top of every single project. See more about our "No New Dams and Diversions" program here: https://savethecolorado.org/campaigns/fighting-irresponsible-water-projects/

2. We are racing forward with a Rights of Nature for Rivers campaign that is working with local activists and governments in Colorado and Utah to establish new policy and legal protections for rivers that give a real voice to Nature in decision-making. We've had three successes so far -- Nederland, CO; Ridgway, CO; and Grand Lake, CO. Check out this great Channel 9 News story about our work: https://savethecolorado.org/must-watch-tv-our-rights-of-nature-for-the-colorado-river-is-on-channel-9-news-in-colorado/

See more about our Rights of Nature for Rivers campaign here: https://savethecolorado.org/rightsofnature/

3. We support the decommissioning of Glen Canyon Dam and the draining of Lake Powell. There's simply not enough water in the system to keep Lake Powell and Glen Canyon Dam's hydropower functioning. We focus on saving Lake Mead instead, and creating a free-flowing Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. Our lawsuit against Glen Canyon Dam is still active in federal court -- see the details here: https://savethecolorado.org/glen-canyon-dam/

Mission

Save The Colorado's mission is to protect and restore the Colorado River and its tributaries from the source to the sea. Save The Colorado focuses on fighting irresponsible water projects, supporting alternatives to proposed dams and diversions, supporting Rights of Nature for Rivers, and decommissioning and removing deadbeat dams.

Background Statement

Save The Colorado started as a philanthropic project of New Belgium Brewing with support from Patagonia and Clif Bar. After 5 years and due to our success, Save The Colorado spun off in 2015 to be a free-standing 501c3 non-profit organization. We are a small, grassroots, and very pro-active river-saving organization that strives to make a consequential difference in the protection and restoration of the Colorado River and its tributaries. In addition, we do it with soul, passion, and fun!
