Testimonials

"SLV GO! has played a crucial role in helping Crestone Charter School secure funds to support our Safe Routes To School program. Specifically, last year's SLVGO!'s Development Coordinator worked with Burt Wadman, ESLVTC Facilitator and myself in writing the grant proposal which awarded Saguache County $500,000 to build an accessible route to school connecting the Baca Subdivision to the Crestone Charter School." - Grace Katherine Anderson, Safe Routes to School Coordinator

"SLV GO! is a dynamic organization that works hard to provide San Luis Valley residents and visitors with accessible and inclusive outdoor recreation opportunities that connect communities, improve wellness, encourage stewardship, and contribute to the economic vitality of the region. Their involvement with Eastern San Luis Valley Trails Coalition and many other local entities throughout the SLV has truly helped build communities as well as a valley-wide network of recreation opportunities." - Laura Archuleta

"SLV GO! has been an indispensable partner to the Eastern San Luis Valley Trails Coalition (ESLVTC) as its work in and around Crestone has expanded. SLV GO!'s participation, support, and counsel have been key ingredients in this process, and we look forward to an ongoing relationship in mutual support of fully aligned and complementary goals." Burt Wadman, Coordinator, Eastern San Luis Valley Trails Coalition

Mission

Our mission is to provide residents and visitors throughout the San Luis Valley with accessible and inclusive outdoor recreation opportunities that connect communities, improve wellness, encourage stewardship, and contribute to the economic vitality of the region.

Background Statement

The mission of San Luis Valley Great Outdoors (SLV GO!) is directly connected to the landscape and people that shape and inspire our work. Spanning over 8,000 square miles, the San Luis Valley (SLV) is a diverse region. It encompasses six counties which vary in topography from fourteen-thousand feet mountain peaks to the tallest dunes in North America, fertile farmlands, and the riparian banks of the Rio Grande. Resources are rich and varied in the SLV, yet many of the communities do not have sustainable and inclusive access to their backyard resource. SLV GO! formed as a coalition in 2013 to combat this issue. As a bridge between multiple efforts, we maximize improvements, avoid duplication, and reduce isolation among our communities. We currently have around 40 partner organizations including public land agencies, federal land agencies, land trusts, nonprofits, community groups, and local city councils and municipalities. Each partner organization brings a unique set of assets and constituents as we connect the interests of public and private entities and move toward action on our common goals, with a special focus on initiatives that benefit underserved populations and areas with limited access to recreation. Our efforts are intended to break down socioeconomic barriers that exist in the outdoor recreation field and provide accessibility to people of all backgrounds.

As a result, SLV GO! has begun to create a culture in the SLV that fully embraces their outdoor assets regardless of race, age, gender, or socioeconomic status. SLV GO! has assisted and been a voice of support for more than 20 projects in the SLV and has brought in over 2.3 million dollars for various outdoor recreation projects as well as the laid groundwork for over 20 miles of trails in the SLV. Our mission is dependent on the stewardship of the San Luis Valley's resources as well as the commitment and buy-in of communities. We realize that if we take care of these natural resources, they will ultimately take care of us.
