Project Smile Dental and Vision strives to meet an urgent need of providing dental and vision care to every low-income child in need eligible to attend school in the Poudre School District. Without dental and vision care, students find it difficult to stay in school and concentrate due to pain or inadequate vision. Proper dental care and vision correction will have a lasting impact on students' lives allowing them to compete with their peers.
A little boy was identified at a Project Smile (PS) elementary school screening as needing urgent dental care. He had recently come to Fort Collins with his family from another country and spoke little English. His gums were swollen and bleeding. We referred him to one of our PS dentists and all his cavities were filled, teeth cleaned and a hygiene plan with supplies put in place.
A girl was identified as needing glasses. PS arranged a free eye exam and 2 pairs of glasses. She told her mother that she had not realized the clock used in class to tell time had hands on it.
Before any child can be expected to fully invest in his or her education, their basic needs must be met. Children living in poverty often struggle in regard to this.
