Testimonials

"Penguins NEED our help. Ten of the world's eighteen species of penguins are threatened with extinction- more than half! Their survival is at risk due to constant environmental threats that have negative effects on their well-being. If penguins are to thrive, we must come together and do our part to save them before it's too late." - Paula Roth, Board President

"Penguins are an important animal to protect and conserve not only because they are globally recognized and adored, but also because they are so sensitive to changes in their environment that they indicate the overall health of the planet. When we protect the environment in which penguins live, we are also increasing the health of the planet as a whole.

Penguins are challenging to protect and conserve because they live in such difficult-to-reach places. But we continue our work tirelessly because they are indicator species, and 10 of the 18 species of penguins are threatened with extinction. Their importance to the environment and their importance as global icons highlight their urgent need for protection." - David Schutt, Executive Director

Mission

Penguins International’s mission is: protecting penguins to protect the planet. We achieve our mission by actively engaging in penguin conservation projects to advance knowledge and understanding of penguins through scientific research, and to promote awareness of threats to penguins by providing conservation education to the public.

Background Statement

Out of 18 penguin species found around the world, 9 are threatened with extinction according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. Penguins are an indicator species; they are so sensitive to changes in their environment that they indicate the overall health of the planet. When we protect the environment in which penguins live, we are also increasing the health of the planet as a whole. Since the date of our inception on February 15, 2017, Penguins International has been committed to preserving and protecting penguins around the world. The organization was founded in response to gaps in overall penguin conservation that needed to be addressed. We are currently volunteer-led and utilize the support of numerous volunteers to accomplish our mission and goals. Current initiatives include field conservation, community education, and scientific research.
