PLAY Boulder Overview

Established in 1976 as the official non-profit partner of Boulder Parks & Recreation (BPR), the PLAY Boulder Foundation mobilizes community support for excellence in parks and recreation. Our mission is to enhance local health and quality of life through education, philanthropy, and advocacy.

By surpassing municipal standards and leveraging community passion, we go beyond what tax dollars can afford. Notable successes include the PLAYpass program addressing the systemic barriers to underresourced youth access to recreation, the Tree Trust program which addresses the Emerald Ash Borer crisis, hosting the GreatBoulder Duck Race, and sponsoring philanthropic opportunities in public spaces.

Our strategic pillars are Access for All, Environmental Sustainability, and Urban Placemaking, aligned with the 2022 BPR Master Plan. As BPR's non-profit partner, we sustain a mutually beneficial public-private partnership, supporting community health and wellness.

PLAY Boulder uniquely benefits the community through several key contributions:

  1. Leveraging Resources: We bring together public, private, and individual resources to increase health and wellness opportunities for the entire community.
  2. Capacity Building: We enhance existing department and community programming through fundraising efforts, scholarship offerings, and community organizing, thereby increasing the department's capacity to serve.
  3. Civic Involvement and Engagement: We cultivate a culture of civic involvement and engagement, encouraging community members to actively participate in shaping their public spaces.
  4. Enhanced Support: PLAY Boulder provides support that extends beyond the city's capabilities, capitalizing on our partnerships and resources to deliver additional amenities and services in parks and recreation centers, ensuring accessibility and appeal to all residents.

Giving Activity

Mission

PLAY's mission is to support excellence in parks and recreation by mobilizing community support through education, philanthropy, and advocacy. We enhance local public spaces, preserve Boulder's environment, and expand access to recreation programs.

Background Statement

The PLAY Boulder Foundation (PLAY) began its efforts as the official non-profit partner of the City of Boulder Parks and Recreation department in 1976, a time when protecting our urban parks and public spaces was critical to the future of Boulder. PLAY helped the department launch the first Boulder Creek Festival, which provided funds to jumpstart PLAY's mission and initiate outreach for protecting Boulder's urban spaces.

Most recently, PLAY has realigned programmatic and project initiatives to reflect our community's changing economic, cultural, and environmental needs, and infuses fiscal sponsorship in all we do. PLAY's three core values and initiatives include Access, Environmental Sustainability and Urban Placemaking. PLAY delivers programming that aligns with each of these core values.

Access: PLAY seeks to ensure that residents of all ability, age, and means can access the exceptional programs Boulder has to offer while feeling welcomed and included. Our PLAYpass program aims to reduce barriers to fee-based participation in sport and recreation programs, so all Boulder youth can thrive and live healthy, active lifestyles. PLAYpass awards eligible youth with $250 non-cash "vouchers" to be applied towards the cost of registration for approved Service Providers' sports and recreation programs.

Environmental Sustainability: PLAY is dedicated to ensuring the long-term sustainability of Boulder's environment. From our city's trees to pollinator-friendly plants, PLAY is making strides to keep our city healthy and resilient for years to come. The Tree Trust works with citizens to support trees in Boulder and promote and grow a healthy urban canopy. The program's goal is to provide citizens with resources to care for their trees, tools to recognize and prevent developing diseases, and the aid to retain a sustainable urban canopy.

Urban Placemaking: Through PLAY's urban placemaking initiatives, we seek to enhance local facilities, parks, and public gathering spaces in Boulder to foster a more unified and healthy community. For example, some of the work we have been involved in is the most recent updates at the Boulder Reservoir. As the reservior remains one of our city's most unique and beloved parks. We supported improvements to this mountain-side beachfront by raising funds to add a playground, boardwalk, and seating areas to the new visitors center.
