The Ouray County Museum is located in the 130 year old St. Joseph's Miner''s Hospital building. We are embarking on a multi-year three phase project to restore and preserve the structural and architectural integrity of the Museum building.
The Smithsonian Institution says the Ouray County Museum is the "best little museum in the west".
Arthur Frommer's ,Colorado and the Rockies for Dummies, says of the Ouray County Museum " If you only go to one county museum in the course of your travels, make it this one".

The Ouray County Historical Society (OCHS) is dedicated to preserve, protect, procure, exhibit, and interpret whatever relates to the natural, social, and cultural history of Ouray County and the adjacent San Juan Mountain region of Colorado.
The Ouray County Historical Society was founded in 1971 with the lease of the vacant St. Joseph's Miners Hospital. The building was purchased in 1976. The Museum contains four floors , 29 rooms and over 40 separate exhibits. There are also 2 historic cabins and one display barn on the property. The Museum receives well over 500 artifacts, documents and photos each year. In 2013 the OCHS purchased a business condominium on Main Street in Ouray to house our research center that contains over 9,000 books, over 25,000 documents and more than 6,000 historic photos.
