Opera on Tap's mission is to expose new audiences to opera and classical music by taking it out of the concert hall and performing it in alternative venues, to aid young performers in their development and to promote and present new classical works of contemporary classical and operatic composers.
Founded in 2006 and incorporated in New York in 2007, Opera on Tap is a Brooklyn-based organization that has blossomed into a national organization with vibrant Chapters currently active in New York City, Potsdam, NY, Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti, Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Honolulu, Los Angeles, Milwaukee, New Orleans, Denton TX, San Francisco, Seattle, The Twin Cities and Washington DC.
Begun as a grassroots organization, the philosophy behind Opera on Tap's expansion is that of local to global. Chapter performances in all locales are populated by local performers and administrated by local organizers interested in keeping opera and classical vocal music viable in mainstream culture.
Through its Chapter program Opera on Tap has created a large national network of performers, creators, supporters, and audiences. OOT has gained national recognition as an innovative force on the classical music scene in the media (NY Times, NPR, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, NHK/Japan National Public TV, Current TV, The NY Daily News, WNYC, WFMU, Chicago Today, Chicago Reader, the LA Times, and LA Weekly among others),classical music industry service organizations (Opera America, Musical America), and institutions such as BAM, NY City Opera, the Metropolitan Opera, New York Philharmonic, and New Orleans Opera (which sponsors the New Orleans Chapter).
Opera on Tap Colorado maintains a busy and diversified performance schedule. Singers have performed with local opera companies including Opera Colorado, Central City Opera, Opera Theatre of the Rockies, Fort Collins Opera, Loveland Opera Theatre, and Boulder Opera.
"Opera on Tap Colorado is a wonderful organizations that allows singers to perform in a casual and supportive environment. As opera singers, we are passionate about sharing with people what a powerful art form opera is and building a new generation of opera lovers. Opera on Tap allows us to bring opera to people in non-traditional venues. It is amazing to watch someone who has never experienced opera fall in love with it for the first time!"
