Thanks to all who have donated money, time and know how! We are getting very close to our commitment with the City of Ft. Collins for funding a Whitewater Park in downtown Fort Collins! Please keep an eye out for more news on this in upcoming weeks.
This year our goal is to raise $10,000 dollars on Colorado Gives Day that will go directly towards funding construction of the whitewater park. Note the total shown isn't fully accurate for total funds raised. For this campaign we are shooting for $82K, this is $10K above the $72K from at the start of November.
What is a whitewater park? It can be many things to many people. It is somewhere in town to learn how to kayak. A place where you could surf your kayak. Or your boogie board. Or your canoe or tube. Or watch folks play in the water? A whitewater park is all of these!
We are a local group of outdoor enthusiasts who would like to see Fort Collins have a whitewater park like 22 other cities in Colorado. We are raising funds to aid in a private/public partnership with the city of Fort Collins to fund the whitewater park portion of the Downtown Poudre River Project. Per the City's recommendation, we are raising $1,000,000 in private funds to put towards the project, and very good progress has been made on this front in the last year. But we are not quite there yet. The Community Foundation of Northern Colorado is serving as the fiscal sponsor for this project.
A whitewater park would provide a variety of benefits to the Poudre River corridor as well as the City. Among these would be providing another attraction to bring in out of town visitors, providing a safe place for people of all ages to practice with their water craft (be those kayaks, canoes, boards, sups, etc). It also provides good access points to the river for waders, fishermen and others as well as things for people to watch while walking the Poudre River Trail. A whitewater park can also be used as another location for educating people about a river's ecology, health, and benefits to the community and wildlife.
