Testimonials

My name is Rammaya S. I live in Sabhung Bhagawatipur VDC, Ward no. 7. We are 6 members in our family including my husband one son, 3 daughters. My husband doesn't have any job so he stays at home and looks after the goats and buffalo. Because of big economic problem my son has to stop his education at class 6 and he is now in Malaysia since 2 years. I have to look after my children & also to look after my home. My husband used to drink and get violent sometimes. I have many responsibilities at home & have to manage everything by myself including household activities, caring of my children, looking after their studies, and being involved in agricultural activities too. I am also involved in Dhaka weaving from starting (the program) & I am regular at the training center from then.
When Namlo arrived in the village with Dhaka Project I was very happy because I got a weaving skill. With the help & support of Namlo I gained the skill of Dhaka weaving & I can now easily weave any designs after looking at it at once. I was not able to go school in my lifetime but now I am happy with having skills with my hands. My family has to be dependent with the income from Dhaka. I managed my time to go Dhaka Weaving during the Day time as the community building is very near to my house. After weaving the dhakas I am making money for myself which is making me independent. My confidence is now higher than before & I can support my kids to pay their school fees & able to save a little money monthly at the Cooperative organization from the money that I earned from Dhaka weaving.
We have many problems in my family and I sometime get frustrated of not being able to solve the economic problem of my family but at daytime I regularly go to weave Dhaka which reduces my all frustration and tensions too. At the morning time I have to prepare food for my kids & make them ready for the school & also to look after my shop. My elder daughter helps me in shop at morning & evening time.
I am very much thankful for Namlo for providing the home based employment for me. I am also involved in cooperative and regularly participate at monthly meeting. I am able to save a little money at cooperative. We have started a cooperative organization with the help & continuous support from Namlo. I am very happy that I am now a member of the cooperative & I have learned many things after the co-op started. I am happy to have skills from which I can earn money myself and also happy that I am involve in other income-generating works.
I want to give big thank to Namlo for the continuous support & help for the people of Sabhung. In future I am expecting to get many skill development trainings from Namlo.
Thank you
Rammaya S.

"When I joined the weaving training, my husband was not happy. He already had sold our land and home for alcohol. He did not earn a single rupee. Though I had problems, I focused on weaving. Now the situation has changed. My husband recognizes my efforts. He also started to work again after seeing my progress. During this one-year training period, I learned many ideas about weaving and business skills. Now, I'm known for fine and fast weaving. My production quantity is high among the weaving group. My husband and children are happy. My family has started to give me moral and physical support. I can afford lunch and school supplies for the children from the income I get from weaving. We women of the weaving group wanted to continue this program for the long term. We hope after the construction of the new Sabhung Vocational Center building we can do even better."

Mission

Namlo International builds long term partnerships with vulnerable communities to support them in developing sustainable solutions to promote greater educational, economic, and nutritional wellbeing.

Background Statement

Founded in 1999, Namlo International was started by Magda King, the first woman from Spain to reach the summit of an 8000m peak. In appreciation for the help she received from the Sherpa people during her expeditions, she wanted to give something back and chose education as the best gift.

To make that gift a reality, Magda traveled throughout the US, talking about her experiences as a climber and her dream of improving the lives of the Nepali people. Her presentations raised $10,000 in donations, enough at that time to build an elementary school. After spending 3 months in rural Nepal helping the community of Yarmasing build a school, she returned to Denver and co-founded Namlo International with her husband, Dr. Hugh King.

Based on their experiences in Nepal, Magda and Hugh saw that the key to success was helping communities take responsibility for their schools -- including participating in their construction, developing co-ops and income generating projects to support their school, and working together to provide governance and support for good teaching and learning. Their goal was not just to build schools, but also to make them self-sustaining. They also saw an opportunity to connect American school children with Namlo schools, so that US students could experience the joy of making a difference.

Recently, Namlo has developed a broad-based approach to community development that works with communities to identify and build the capacity of local leadership, so they can develop their own vision for their future, and have the tools to achieve it. This broad-based approach includes education, economic development, women's empowerment, infrastructure improvement. Namlo has also engaged in market-oriented development, by helping rural families benefit from economic opportunities in agriculture and textile production. In 2017, Namlo completed the construction of two secondary schools in Nepal and is currently overseeing the construction of one to be completed in 2018.

Namlo's many accomplishments in Nepal, Nicaragua, and in the United States earned it recognition in Peter Singer's book The Life You Can Save as a small organization that makes a big difference and one that is worthy of support.
