Music in the Mountains

A nonprofit organization

Music in the Mountains brings high caliber classical music to rural southwest Colorado. We produce a three week long festival and provide music education programming in local schools aligned with Colorado Curricula standards to fill gaps in music education created by budget shortfalls.

Testimonials

Smithsonian Magazine featured Music in the Mountains in their 2012 article, "The 20 Best Small Towns in America," as one of the premier attractions in Durango. We were recognized in 2012 in Colorado Homes and Lifestyle Magazine, "Expect nothing less than goose bumps from performances by an outstanding lineup of virtuosos. Start cultivating your kids' musical appreciation at the special Family Festivo." We have also received an El Pomar Foundation Award for Excellence in Arts and Humanities and a Durango Area Chamber of Commerce Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Community.

Mission

Our mission is to produce an exceptional summer music festival with musicians of the highest caliber; entertain, educate and delight audiences with the richness of classical music, and complement concerts with year-round educational programs for youth.

Background Statement

Music in the Mountains is the premiere classical music festival in Southwest Colorado. We bring world-renowned soloists to a remote rural area of our state to perform in festival concerts and teach master classes to local youth. We also offer a number of free community events, including some specifically designed for children and young families.

For more than 35 years Music in the Mountains has offered exceptional orchestra, chamber and world music concerts to southwest Colorado. The organization has grown steadily from its first season of six concerts in August to the current year-round mix of educational programs, community events and professional concerts. The festival orchestra has grown from eleven musicians in our first season to a professional core of about 80 performers.

In 2000 we added an educational outreach program called "Music in the Mountains Goes to School". The education programs meet Colorado curricula standards and fill the gaps in local music education that have resulted from budget cuts in the schools.

Our productions of classical orchestra, intimate chamber, and world music concerts offer something for the entire community. Concerts are presented at a variety of venues in the area but our main stage is the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College.

As part of the $9.1 million industry attributed to the Durango arts and culture economy (per the Arts & Economic Prosperity Study 2012), we strive to continue our strong positive economic contribution to the community.
