Mackintosh Academy nurtures the keen minds and compassionate hearts of the gifted child in a responsive and caring community of learners. Our students mature into confident, healthy human beings inspired to contribute to a world that needs them.
Opened in 1977, Mackintosh Academy was the first private school in Colorado to recognize the unique needs of gifted children. Eve Mackintosh opened the school and served as director until 1992. With the benefit of over thirty years of operation, the school continues to set new standard for gifted education. Our holistic, well-rounded educational program focuses on the mind and the heart and nurtures the social, emotional, physical and creative needs of gifted children, as well as academic ones. In addition it emphasizes the need to put learning into action to make our community and the outside world a better place.
The curriculum provides our students with the academic foundation and skills to continue in any challenging high school or preparatory school environment. We employ the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years and Middle Years Programme curricular framework which helps ensure the individual student is engaged, challenged and pushed to be an independent thinker and use his/her knowledge as a stepping stone for action within the world.
Our program prepares our students for the International Baccalaureate Degree program which is offered at local public high schools as well as schools around the world. With the benefits of their rich preparation, our graduates have gained admission to the best private college preparatory schools in Colorado and around the nation. Many of our students received scholarships to assist with tuition.
Gifted children require a unique educational setting to foster a love of learning which maximizes their potential and community sensitivity. Since it's inception, Mackintosh Academy has gained recognition in gifted educational programming by fostering a challenging and rich academic curriculum that is greatly enhanced with experiences in visual arts, theatre, music, physical education, foreign language and information technology.
We believe a child who is academically prepared with knowledge is only partially equipped to make a meaningful contribution to society and the world. We cultivate a community for the gifted child that is acutely aware of their social and emotional sensitivities and appropriately nurtures them. We believe that traits such as being empathic and compassionate towards others, listening with understanding, hearing different points of view, negotiating, communicating, resolving conflicts and taking responsibility for behavior are critical in the development of our children's social and leadership skills.
Learning does not occur in isolation but rather, in a community of learners who are accepting and understanding of others' feelings, opinions and beliefs. Our classroom communities reflect a healthy exchange and tolerance of ideas in a respectful climate. We want to give our children opportunities to see the world through their own experiences and through the eyes of others. We want our children to learn about those who have come before them and discover ways each of them can contribute to the human story in their lifetime. We value cultural and religious diversity, global studies and we acknowledge interdependence as a unique aspect of the global community in which our children live and will one day contribute their gifts in profound, passionate, and meaningful ways.
The mission and philosophy of Mackintosh Academy aligns closely with the mission and philosophy of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Organization. Consequently, we are officially authorized as an IB World School. for both the Primary Years Program (PYP) and Middle Years Program (MYP.) The IB Program gives students discipline, creativity, flexibility, skills and a personal value system by which they can guide their own lives and become thoughtful and involved members of local communities and our global world.
Mackintosh has been a truly special place for our family for the past 3 years. My 3 children are thriving there - they love their teachers and peers, are challenged academically in a way that resonates with their learning styles, and their natural curiosity and love for learning continues to be nurtured. I know it's the perfect place for them when they complain about having to miss school because they love it so much! As a family, we felt embraced by the community as soon as we moved to Boulder. We continue to enjoy building authentic relationships with other parents and being involved in the school in a variety of different ways. Mackintosh holds a special place in our hearts! - Alice Kembel
My family will be forever grateful to the entire team at Mackintosh Academy. From the moment we stepped out of our car several years ago, we knew that we had happened upon a wonderful treasure. - Stacy Nimmo
I have been a teacher at Mackintosh for over 5 years. I was drawn to the school because of its commitment to holistic learning: to nurturing all parts of a child's growth. I have stayed because I feel a part of something significant. - Lula Gilbert
Our son attended Mackintosh Academy for 6 years and is now in high school. When we realized the public school system would not work for us, we chose Mackintosh because of the IB curriculum which provides strong integration between subjects as well as a global perspective. The supportive and caring environment between teachers, staff and students was also a very important factor. Our son has a unique learning profile. The teachers at Mackintosh were able to understand his needs and to provide the flexible, differentiated instruction that was necessary. As a result, our son has grown into a confident young man who enjoys learning and looks forward to his future We all believe, especially my son, that Mackintosh Academy changed the direction of his educational career, for which we are so grateful.
