Testimonials

The Longmont Emergency Unit has received national and local government recognition for volunteerism within the community as well acknowledgments from surrounding fire service agencies and private citizens within the community. The LEU has a long history of serving it's community. As an example, many years ago the Unit was featured in a Rescue 911 television documentary involving a successful dramatic swift water rescue in the mountains of Boulder County.

Mission

The MISSION of the Longmont Emergency Unit is to provide professional volunteer emergency services and mutual aid to government entities. (Volunteer Members Must Have: Desire to Serve, Ability to Perform & Courage to Act)

Background Statement

On December 9, 1956, three small brothers drowned in a lake near the City of Longmont. There was no one trained for water rescue or recovery of bodies within the local government agencies. Statewide, there was no official dive rescue team in existence at the time. The tragedy highlighted the lack of adequately trained rescue personnel and equipment available to respond to this type of emergency. As a result, the Longmont Emergency Unit was formed and activated on June 25, 1957.
